The Pro’s and Con’s of Importing

Pros

  • Cost-Effectiveness

Enjoy significant savings compared to buying from local dealerships, or local individuals, thanks to direct access to wholesale auction prices in Japan.

  • Investment Value

Many imported models, especially rare or unique ones, hold their value well and can even appreciate over time.

  • Wider Selection

Access a broader variety of models and specifications, far exceeding local offerings.

Cons

  • Longer Wait Times

Importing a vehicle typically takes longer than purchasing from a local dealer or from a local individual.

  • No Test Drive

The inability to test drive before purchase can be a drawback for some customers.

  • Initial Uncertainty

Buying a vehicle sight unseen can be a leap of faith, though we provide detailed information and imagery to help ease this concern.

How the process works

  1. Pre-commencement Consultation

We'll discuss your preferences, budget, and any questions you have. Expect honest advice about your expectations and any limitations.

  2. Our Service Charge

The process starts once you pay a one-time service charge of $1,155.00. Our role is to organise and facilitate importing the vehicle. All subsequent costs will be billed to you directly by our trusted partners. (*Note: This charge is partially refundable in case of cancellation. See details below.)

  3. Vehicle Search

Utilising our network in Japan, we'll find vehicles matching your criteria and present them to you. This includes sourcing from auctions, dealers, and wholesalers, and translating auction sheets as needed.

  4. Vehicle Selection and Inspection

You choose the Kei truck or van to purchase. Our trusted Japanese partners handle an in-person inspection on your behalf.

  5. Auction / Purchase

For auctions, we will bid up to a pre-agreed amount. If successful, we proceed; if not, the search restarts. For purchases from dealers or wholesalers, we'll inform you of the price and await your decision to proceed.

  6. Payment

Once your vehicle is purchased, you'll receive an invoice with the cost and the Free On Board (FOB) charge. You will also receive a shipping invoice which will include customs fees, duties, GST, and shipping insurance. This covers all expenses for the process to get your vehicle on a ship to leave Japan and arrive in Australia. We can assist with the payment process in Japanese Yen.

  7. Shipping

As soon as the FOB and shipping invoice is paid our Japanese partners will arrange shipping to your nearest Australian port on the next available ship. Shipping typically takes two to three weeks. Roll-On, Roll-Off shipping is preferred unless it’s a rare or exotic vehicle. We'll provide you with an estimated arrival time. After arrival the process of getting your car off the docks generally takes about a week.

  8. Customs and Compliance

A compliance workshop will be arranged by us prior to your vehicle arriving in Australia. The workshop may request a deposit for import approval. After customs clearance, the workshop performs a full service, mechanical check, and any model-specific compliance tasks. If the vehicle needs any extra work for a roadworthy, we will sort that out prior to obtaining a safety certification. We'll then supply all documents required.

  9. Pick up or Delivery

Once compliance is complete and all invoices are settled, you can pick up your vehicle. If needed, we can arrange delivery (at your cost). Ensure your vehicle is registered and insured before use. Drive carefully until you refill with fresh fuel to avoid engine issues.

* Before a vehicle is purchased on your behalf, you can request a refund of the service charge. However, please be aware that $300 will be deducted from the refund to cover our initial search costs if the request is made within the first three months. After three months, an extra $110 will be deducted for each month or part of a month thereafter.

If you decide to cancel the import after we have purchased a vehicle for you in Japan, the full amount will not be refunded. Additionally, should there be any costs for re-auctioning the vehicle in Japan that exceed our service charge, you will be responsible for these additional expenses.

Vehicles above $15,000AUD will require a deposit to proceed to the purchase stage. If you cancel pre-purchase, this deposit is fully refunded. If you cancel post-purchase, the deposit will be used to re-action the vehicle and cover any expenses and losses incurred and the remaining will be refunded.

Remember, we are here to help and make the process as enjoyable and easy as possible. If you have any questions on any steps feel free to ask. I have collated some frequently asked questions below.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Kei Truck Imports Australia unique?

Unlike typical import brokers, we originated from a community of Kei truck enthusiasts. Our passion, combined with our extensive network in Japan, distinguishes us. We prioritise transparency and strive to simplify the import process. Our goal is to ensure that each vehicle not only aligns perfectly with your preferences but also meets our high standards, all at the best possible price. More than just importing vehicles, we aim to nurture a community and share our passion with every client.

  • How much does your brokerage service cost?

Our service charge is a one-time fee of $1,155.00. This covers the entire import process from selection to delivery. The charge is partially refundable prior to the purchase of a vehicle.

  • Can I get a refund on the service charge if I don't find a car?

Yes, you can. If you decide not to proceed before a vehicle is purchased, you’re eligible for a refund minus $300 to cover our initial search costs within the first three months. An additional $110 is deducted for each subsequent month.

  • What are the costs?

While we’ve aimed for comprehensive and average accuracy, the final pricing may vary due to several factors. These include your port location in Australia, the port in Japan, the auction house costs where the vehicle is purchased, and specific compliance requirements. We aim to provide budget expectations after our initial consultation and keep you informed every step of the way so there are no surprises.

  • Where do you source your Kei trucks and vans?

We source vehicles from a wide range of auctions, dealers, and wholesalers across Japan. Our network is extensive, ensuring we find the best options that meet your criteria. Our preferred method is through auctions, where we can provide more reliable assessments.

  • How long does the process take?

The time it takes to import a vehicle can differ based on various factors, such as the availability of the vehicle, shipping schedules, and specific compliance needs. The search for the perfect vehicle that meets both your preferences, and our quality standards typically takes from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Once you’ve selected a vehicle, the period from that point until it’s ready for pickup or delivery ranges from several weeks to a few months. Our goal is to deliver your vehicle as swiftly as possible. Prompt service leads to customer satisfaction, and satisfied customers are more likely to use our services again. Rest assured, we will keep you informed at every step, maintaining transparency and helping you set realistic expectations.

  • What's the difference between an Import Broker and a Car Dealer?

Unlike a car dealer who often sells from their stock at marked-up prices, we, as an Import Broker, charge a flat service fee without adding any margin to the cost of the vehicle. Our role is to assist you in directly purchasing your vehicle, ensuring a transparent and cost-effective process. We’re committed to finding the best vehicle that fits your needs at the most favorable price. This approach not only benefits you but also helps us build our reputation. For us, the source of the vehicle doesn’t matter; our priority is meeting your specific desires.

  • Why is your service charge worth it?

Our service charge reflects the value of our comprehensive support, expertise, and network in Japan. We aim to ensure a smooth and reliable import process, avoiding common pitfalls and challenges of importing vehicles independently.

  • What makes Kei Truck Imports Australia more trustworthy than your competitors?

Emerging from founding the Kei Trucks Appreciation Society (KTAS) community. Our deep passion for Kei trucks and the community drives us. We are dedicated to cultivating this community and maintaining a strong culture of trust. Our steadfast dedication to customer satisfaction has solidified our reputation as a dependable and knowledgeable broker in this specialised market.

  • What if I encounter problems with my imported vehicle?

We stand by our service and are committed to supporting you throughout the import process. While we ensure thorough inspections and compliance checks, the inherent risks associated with purchasing a second-hand vehicle still exist. Nevertheless, should any issues arise, rest assured, we are always here to help and guide you with anything you might need.
